Parental Leave Policies by Country
United States: FMLA provides 12 weeks unpaid job-protected leave. California, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Washington, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Oregon, Colorado, and DC have Paid Family Leave programs (typically 60-90% wage replacement for 6-12 weeks).
United Kingdom: 52 weeks Statutory Maternity Leave (39 weeks paid via SMP at 90% earnings for 6 weeks, then £184.03/week or 90% earnings whichever is lower). Shared Parental Leave allows parents to split remaining leave.
Canada: EI Maternity benefits: 15 weeks at 55% earnings (max $668/week in 2024). Standard Parental: up to 40 weeks shared. Extended Parental: up to 69 weeks shared at lower rate (33%).
Australia: 18 weeks Paid Parental Leave at National Minimum Wage ($882.80/week in 2024). Dad and Partner Pay: 2 weeks at same rate. Must meet work test (330 hours in 10 months).
Germany: Mutterschutz: 6 weeks before + 8 weeks after birth (100% pay). Elterngeld: up to 14 months at 65-67% net income (capped at €1,800/month). Both parents can share.
France: Congé Maternité: 16 weeks minimum (6 prenatal + 10 postnatal), longer for multiples. Paid at 100% salary (capped at social security ceiling). Fathers get 25 days congé paternité.
